Our passionate student leaders are the heart of Stepping Up — driving digital literacy and building connections with refugee families.
Founder
Hi! My name is Raunak Gupta, and I’m a senior at Johns Creek High School. I was born in India and moved to the U.S. at the age of seven. One of the greatest challenges I faced early on was overcoming the language barrier. With time, support, and access to the right resources, I was able to learn English and discover where I belonged. But I came to realize that not every newcomer has the same opportunities. During my internship with the International Rescue Committee, I learned that one of the largest refugee populations in the U.S. is right here in Clarkston, Georgia. That discovery inspired me to take action. After working with the City of Clarkston and DeKalb County Schools, I founded Stepping Up—an initiative dedicated to empowering refugee families by providing educational support, mentorship, and community.
Grant Manager
I’m a senior at Johns Creek High School. I am heavily involved in Mock Trial, Future Business Leaders of America, and Scouts of America, where I recently became an Eagle Scout. I believe that Stepping Up stands out because of the 1-on-1 connection you are able to make with families. Actually being with the parents and kids, watching them learn how to type or make a resume they can use to pursue a job is one of the most meaningful parts of my life.
Secretary of Treasury
I’m a senior at Johns Creek High School involved in several clubs such as the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, French Club, and I recently became captain of the Cross Country team. What makes Stepping Up stand out is how you see the impact of your volunteer work on the lives of students and parents. My dad is an immigrant from Ghana who moved to Georgia in high school, so being able to help families who might have faced similar struggles has been truly rewarding.
Social Media Manager
Hi! I’m Tyler and I am a sophomore attending Johns Creek High School! I am an active participant at our school, from being on the varsity tennis team to being part of the Johns Creek High School Band program. I have a passion for serving my community, and I hope that through Stepping Up I can make an impact in our world!
Director of Partnerships
Hi, right now I’m a Junior at Johns Creek High School, where I’m involved in activities such as Policy Debate, Model UN, & Newspaper. Outside of school I like to watch movies and play video games with my friends. On Thursday’s, we go to Indian Creek elementary to help teach refugees digital literacy, which has been personally rewarding because it reminds me of when I would teach my mom basic computer skills; I think this has made me a better teacher because I’m able to simplify complex topics into something non-native English speakers can understand.
Director of Volunteers
